Space and Spaces

Which is greater: box or boxes, apple or apples, house or houses?

Which is greater, space or spaces?

"We need a bigger house, we need more space."

-everyone on every home show

outer space

Do people really want more space, or more (and better) spaces?

If you own a 7500 square foot vacant lot, how do you get the most space out of it? Do nothing. You have 7500 square feet all the way to the stars. The second you start to box it is you lose space, but are adding spaces.

What is great, room or rooms? What is better, rooms or spaces?

Rooms are just spaces with walls. Sometimes walls are beneficial but they should not be the default.

A space dedicated to a purpose makes the space inviting and useful.

Space is about more. Spaces are about better. Quantity vs quality.

A spacious room, a master bedroom. So much space

Small cozy bedroom
A cozy space for sleeping.

One of the above bedrooms checks all the boxes of people's stated desires: a huge space, very bright with tons of light, a luxuirous master suite of a bedroom. The other is a small dark space.

A bed is for sleeping. When it is time for sleep I want a dark, cozy, secure space. A nest, a cocoon, a den- a space where my natural animal instincts for safety can relax. I can close my eyes, turn off my brain and drift off to pleasant dreams.

The last thing I want in a bedroom is to feel exposed and on display. (I also don't want to walk 40 feet across a cold floor to pee in the middle of the night.)

Current housing trends cram boxes into space. A tiny lot with a huge box divided into smaller boxes.

Rooms and boxes, like cells in a spreadsheet.

Contained in a cell, or comforted by a space.
